I'm a sophomore in high school this year and I'd really like to get into an Ivy League college.
Right now, all my required classes (Algebra 2, Biology, English 2, US History) are honors classes. I also take French 2, Gym and Advanced Drawing. Next year, I plan to take 1-2 AP classes along with courses at Yale. (I live really close to Yale, so juniors/seniors at my school can take courses there depending on our GPA). My lowest grade in Freshman year and Sophomore year so far is one B.
I used to play violin when I was little, but quit. So, I don't think that's going to help me much. I know 4 languages (Chinese, English, Dutch and French). Moved to Europe when I was little and moved to US around 6th grade-ish.
I'm also in my school's Environmental Club (set up by my friend) and we're trying to set up my school's recyling again.
Do you think I could get into an Ivy League college? If not, what do you think I should do to improve my chances? Thanks. :)
How to get into an Ivy League college?
When getting into college, there are three factors that you need to consider:
1. grades
2. standardized test scores
3. extra curricular activities
Your grades and your standardized test scores shouldn't be underestimated, but for all intents and purposes, it is just a number tacked on the wall. All I can really say about those is just: do well
I knew someone who had a 4.0 and scored near perfect on their SATs and didn't get into the ivy league college of their choice.
What will distinguish you from all the other 4.0 students is your extra-curricular activities.
extra-curricular activities are perhaps the most important, but it is important to remember that different colleges like different activities, so just harvesting random activities will not get you anywhere.
Your best bet is to figure out what kind of extra-curricular activities that your college prefers. For example; I have a friend who went to Colombia College, and she said that they prefer prospects that have done a lot of foreign travel, and work in foreign countries.
Find a student or even contact the admissions department of your college of choice, find out what kind of students they like to admit. Otherwise, I think you are on the right track.
Reply:How did you do on your PSATs? Take as many APs as you can and prep for their tests; get as many 4s and 5s as you can. Prep for your Junior year PSAT as it will be the determinant re: National Merit Scholarship status. Prep for your Junior year SAT or ACT testing, and plan out which SAT Subject Tests you'll take (I'm sure Yale requires 2-3) and when.
Suggest you read A Is For Admission...great insight into Ivy League admissions process. Of course, Yale is a very difficult school to get into, so even if you're highly qualified, it's a bit of a roll of the dice.
I think the environmental club angle is a great one; if you can take a leadership role in that club and actually get the school's recycling program running again, I think that would help you stand out at somewhere like Yale. Also the 4 language fluency has to be a positive, as very few people have that skill.
Wherever you end up, make the most of your time there.
Best of luck to you.
Reply:your ethnicity may help
Ivy league schools generally pick a cross section. They'll pick from each state, pick urural, urban, homeschooled
you have to fit into their motif or otherwise make them realize you will make them proud.
Reply:It'll also depend on your SAT/ACT scores, a lot of community service hours helps a lot (as well as leadership such as class president/vice president/secretary/treasurer), and a lot of colleges will also consider your level of interest in their school.
Reply:I think you should join your school's student government or any other extracurricular activities that show your leadership skills. Also, it is important to do well on your PSAT and SATs, so prepare for them as well. Take challenging courses and write an amazing application essay and you're set!
Reply:Just continue being who you are and doing the best you can. If you can get in, great. If not, it's not the end of the world. My daughter always wanted to go to Harvard until we actually went to visit it this past summer. She looked around and said "THIS is Harvard??" It's important that you visit the schools you're interested in and then find the best fit for you.
Go to http://www.collegeboard.com and complete "college match" to find your best fit. Good luck and keep up the great work!
Reply:Well.... getting into an ivy league college is very tough unless you're rich, then its very easy, bringing up that B would definately improve your chances, not alot, but they still will be better, I want to go to Harvard, so I keep my grades up to at least A minuses.
