What is ivy league?
The Ivy Leage is actually nothing more than an atheletics league that was formed among eight relatively old, elite universities on the East Coast of the United States. It started out as essentially a league of the schools where rich people sent their kids. That was before the days of 8-9% admissions rates - if you could come up with the high tuition fee, your kid could go there. They've since come to be thought of as the academically elite schools. While all are good schools, they're not necessarily the "best" or "most challenging" schools, even the schools filled with the smartest students (since they accept a large number of students based on atheletics or legacy rather than academic achievement). They are, however, the most competetive schools in the country in terms of admissions rates, with most (all?) admitting less than 15% of applicants for their freshman classes, and some admitting as few as 7 or 8%.



The Ivy League schools are (in no particular order): Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Brown, Penn, Cornell, and Darthmouth.

Reply:You know, I think many people know which school are Ivy League, but not what defines Ivy Leagues. At least, I don't know.



But, I'd say, Harvard U., Princeton U., Yale, Stanford, Univ. of Chicago, make Brown and Duke are Ivy League. Maybe you should check Wikipedia.

But no one has yet pointed out that the Ivy League is an athletic conference made up of eight universities. There were originally four universities in the league -- and they used the Roman Numeral IV (four) to indicate the conference. As it expanded, they changed the name to Ivey -- because the universities in the league were old and prestigious %26amp; the walls of the building were covered with ivey.



Since the eight schools in the league are all excellent schools academically, the term Ivey League has taken on a secondary meaning -- highly prestigious university. For this reason, some people refer to schools like Duke, Northwestern, University of Chicago and Stanford as Ivey League -- even though they are not in that athletic conference.



The schools were originally men's schools. There were seven women's colleges that carry the same kind of prestige as the Ivey League schools. Some now allow men. They are not usually major universities -- but rather very good Liberal Arts colleges. They are Barnard College. Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Radcliffe College, Smith College, Vassar College and Wellesley College. Radcliffe is now a college within Harvard University and Barnard is now a college within Columbia University.
