Will the ivy climbing up old trees kill it?

I have a neighbor who is a bit alarmist on most subjects. She tells me that the large, old pine trees will be killed by the ivy growing up them. Any suggestions on how I verify one way or the other, so I don't waste time if it's no big deal OR leave them at risk if it is a risk?

Ivy is an invasive plant that grows out of control. Its roots dig into whatever it is growing on in order to climb. It can crumble the mortar of bricks (not a good thing for a brick house) and rot wooden lattice. The way it harms a tree is by digging its roots into the bark forcing its way into the cracks of the bark and climbing the height of the tree. I have personally seen many trees covered with ivy that are now dead.

For more information you can look at this website: www.miparks.org. Scroll to the bottom of the website page for ivy/tree info. Hope this helps answer your question. Lisa :)

strangler figs kill trees.
Reply:yes!....it will kill the tree...ivy is bad for anything that i grows on...cut the base of the ivy and pull down as much as you can...and pull up as many ivy roots as possible...then spray with cross-bow as the ivy tries to come back....
Reply:Yes. It will eventually suffocate the tree.
Reply:Yes, some ivys strangle the trees and bushes. Kudzu is particularly bad. Even worse is to let ivy climb on your house. It will loosen the mortar around the bricks.
Reply:no it will not kill the tree tell her to worry about something important
