I have been playing violin for almost five years in orchestra for school. However, I am quitting violin and orchestra next year. I'm afraid that that will interfere with my chances of getting accepted into an ivy league school. However, I have also been playing piano for eight years outside of school. Will colleges notice that?
What do ivy league colleges look for in terms of musical background?
It depends on how you present it. I doubt that the difference between getting in and not getting in will hinge on one activity. Admissions officers look at everything. It's best to concentrate on how you present yourself as an applicant. I'm sure you are in other activities and if you can try to take a leadership role in those, that helps. If you've won any awards for piano definitely list them because that can only help. As long as you have a strong academic record and have things that make you stand out, you have a chance. When you are doing these applications the key is to make them want you and not having your application look like everyone else's. Ivy League universities are trying to form a class and they want all types of people. Best of luck!
