I am going to an Ivy League university and I have applied to 5 jobs. I got rejected to 2 (law firm/courthouse). 2 didn't even respond to my email. and Another one told me they were going to call me by 5 today to tell me if I got it, but didn't even contact me to let me know if I got it or not. (These are all part-time jobs btw.)
I'm frustrated and I feel as if my degree is completely worthless.
Is an Ivy League degree completely worthless?
I think your degree is probably fine, maybe you need to work on your resume.
Reply:College is what you make of it. I went to a state school, but my best friend went to Harvard, another Ivy League.
I have to admit that the coursework wasn't different by any means. When you take the first part of calculus at any school, they don't teach a better form of math at an Ivy League.
However the other students at your school makes the difference. The student body makes the difference between my state school and your Ivy League school. As my professor recently from Cornell mention, the best at Cornell is no better than the best at Penn State, as for the bottom end...
As for getting a job, don't think it's a gimme. Tenacity is the key and don't boast about being an Ivy League member as a major selling point - people only assume the worst that as you smoke your bong in your Nissan 350Z, your father pays your way through school or some version of that.
As for law school, it has fierce competition and don't think it's a gimme also. You'll need top LSAT scores and good essays to make it. Keep at it.
Reply:If you are the kind of person who gives up after five tries at something, I strongly suspect those potential employers were able to tell that from your resume, and realized they'd be be better off without you!
Think about it, is that the sort of person you would hire?
An "Ivy League" degree is completely worthless if it's attached to someone who exudes an aura of "I can't be bothered if something doesn't work the first time..."
Reply:Maybe it's your attitude that's completely worthless. you applie to 5 jobs. WOW!
You have to go after the jobs, you can't sit back and expect it to come to you, then blame the degree. Think about it.
