I am wishing to spread out the English Ivy that I have to cover a larger area.
The area that I already have English Ivy is quite fully covered and by now is clumped up, but I am wishing to extend this Ivy to cover more bare areas.
Is it possible to "propogate" these plants or how exactly could one divide or replant Ivy to save the expense of buying new Ivy plants?
Thanks for your answers!
How is it possible to "propogate" or spread out English ivy in a planting area?
Just take a shovel and cut out a portion of the ivy and a shovel full of dirt and put it where you want it. I seriously doubt you can kill this tough plant. The cutting should grow just as well as the parent plant. Just water the cutting every 2-3 days for a couple of weeks or so.
Reply:It will root on the ground. Lay the branches (still attached to the mother plant) where you want them to grow, weigh them down (rock, brick, whatever you have) they'll root there.
Divide your "clumps" - dig up, cut in half, thirds...and replant. Miraclegro or root stimulator (Fertilome) will help them start faster.
As mentioned, very invasive, will take over.
Reply:o.k I just tried this last year and I had 50/50 results; cut a new sprout ( small branch) off of your an ivy vine. Place it in water until it starts sprouting ( watch for small green roots) and replant it. It should, in time grow into its own vine.
Reply:Hi,
Yes Ivy is easy to propergate, simply take internodal cutting, strike them in a 50/50 mix of peat and sand. Stand in a propagator or cover with platic bag, they'll root within a month.
Reply:you can actually just take a runner (branch) and bury part of it while it is still attached to the main part of the plant, make sure the tip is still out, it will eventually take root although it is a pretty slow process
Reply:I wish I had your problem.
In my climate, it is nearly impossible to keep the stuff under control. It would take over my whole yard and strangle all my trees if given the chance.
It looks pretty, but it is very invasive.
Reply:Just pull a bit off and stick it in wherever you want it - no problem. Slap a bit of water over it now and again. Have your shears ready in a year or two.
Reply:Don't worrie about it it will grow all over the garden on it's own like wild fire. It's a weed. Give it a couple of years and your be fighting it off.
Reply:why would you want English ivy, its an invasive species
Reply:can't you just build something for it to creep onto?..
