I went mountain biking and got into some poison ivy. Big nasty patch on my leg which doesn't itch anymore, but is blistering.
I do have some random spots on my arms/legs/ and neck where it appears I have spread it by scratching and touching other parts of my body.
What can I do over the counter for this mess? The itching is driving me crazy.
Poison ivy/random itching treatment over the counter?
Calamine lotion. Pink bottle. Bathe in it if you have to.
Reply:wait...im confused. i thought you said it doesn't itch anymore but then you said the itching is driving you crazy.
for the itching soak in hot epsom salt water and baking soda. get the water as HOT as you can stand it. then cover in benadryl or calamine lotion. i had poison ivy last year and was absolutely miserable. i don't wish it on my worst enemy.
The person above is incorrect about poison ivy being aggrevated by hot water. Hot water truly does help any type of itching and was truly the only think that helped to relieve the itch for me. Doctors will tell you that hot water really does help to relieve histamine.
Reply:I personally have had poison ivy a million times, especially when I was younger. I use a product called "Sarna" and you can get it in the drug stores over the counter. It has a very nice cooling sensation that other products I have tried do not and it also works. It really relieves that intense deep itch that I know drives you crazy especially in the shower or washing your hands with hot water because hot water aggravates poison ivy. Try Sarna and you will truly be happy you did.
Reply:I'm dealing with poison ivy myself now. The hot water does work for itching, but try adding "Octagon" all-purpose soap which is made by Colgate to your bath water. It has reduced swelling and oozing dramatically.
