I'm interested in creating designs made from ivy, but I was wondering how long it takes for ivy to grow. Do some varieties grow faster? Thanks guys! (or gals)
How fast does ivy grow?
Ivy grows fast, provided it gets proper sunlight and fertilizer, 10-10-10 is the best for ivy. As far as how many varieties, there are quite a few. We grow some of the Hedera varieties, English ivy, Needlepoint, Varigated needlepoint, Teardrop ivy. There is also Algerian ivy, Boston ivy, Canary Island ivy, Grape ivy, Aralia ivy, Baltic ivy, German ivy, Glacier ivy, Irish ivy, Japanese ivy, Kangaroo ivy, Kenilworth ivy, Marine ivy, Nepal ivy, Palor ivy, Patricia Ivy, Persian ivy, Swedish ivy, and ofcourse POISON IVY. Call your local nursery and see what they have and if it is an evergreen for you area. In Atlanta English and varigated Needlepoint stays alive through our cold, snow and ice. Hope this helps, but I say you have more home work to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ivy is invasive but you can keep it under control, just do'nt be afraid to clip it when it starts to over grow it's home. Alot of conservationist here in Atlanta consider it a weed and a non native plant. But I think it is a pretty plant especially when there is a design involved, also when it grow up trees. Happy Planting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:It depends on the mood of the ivy. Be sweet to it and it grows fast.
Reply:Depends on the variety, ivy location and aspect, climate etc.
However, if all these variables (including the stars and planets in complete alignment) then your ivy should grow at least a couple of feet in width per year.
Reply:In general all ivy varieties grow pretty fast. Use care in where you plant it. I use it on a slope in California. Once I used it on the side of a townhome condo. The condo association made me remove it after several years because it damages the exterior.
Reply:there are several kinds of ivy, I know of a few...there are indoor kinds as well as outdoor kinds; I have one known as Devil's Ivy and it is a succulant, meaning that when I forget to water it some week that it won't die on me...it also grows really quickly...almost like a weed...if you are wanting to weave designs you may want to also try hoyas as they are great also that they flower but that would require a time investment as it is a much slower growing vine....you should look into vines not just ivy....check out your local green house as I am sure that they would be able to give you an idea of so more plants that would meet your requirements and time needs...hope this helps you some
Reply:As some have stated so far there is meany types of ivy.
However depends on Location,State and weather condition in your area.
As stated some Ivys will grow on Stucco Walls, Wood,Tree Trunks,in between sidewalks, thru fences.
Some ways to keep it pruned down as some varities grow average 2" to 24" in some good conditions then may need to be pruned back by either the following methiods.
1) Gas or electrical 18" to 36" pruners shears.
2) Lawn mowers.
3) Some professional Garden and Landscape Services also may use Gas Trimmers or commonly called (Weed Eaters or Weed Wackers:)
4) To keep it in areas not desired to grow in usually like 12" to 18"
away from some public walkways or fence lines. That is must follow label and bottle direction. { Useage of a product at least still used in CA so far called Brush Be-Gone used on Poison Ivy,
Wild Black Berries and Yes, Un wanted Ivy in some areas.
Again istress follow labe Recommendation, Ortho, and Bayer
Fertizlers Co. has these available in Local Garden and Home
Nusery Stores Shelves sold to the public, not just License Pest
Control Applicators or Landscape Contractors with special Applicators Lic. such as Ca. Requirments.

Again check your Local Home Depot or Lowes and Garden Nusery in the Special Books Self Help for Sunset Garden, Ortho,
Related Books under Ivy Varities. Before you buy Flats or
Poney packs, even possible One Gallon size containers to start your plants.
Reply:Not what you asked, but it is important. I made the mistake of planting some additional vines on my house. They turned out to have nasty thorns. They also grew rapidly, and were next to impossible to remove, once they attached themselves to anything.
To make it worse, they were hard to eradicate. Terrible mistake. Still trying to eradicate them after three years.
