I'm highly alergic to poison ivy and our trees are full of them. some of the vines are as thick as a 5inch pvc pipe my husband wants to remove them without harming the trees! please advise how?
The poison ivy vines are overtaking my trees?
If you can spray them with round-up that would be the best. Do NOT spray any of the tree you want to save. Then after 7 days take a pruner and cut back that 5 inch stalk.
2-4-D will also kill it but will not send any chemical to take out the root so that would be pointless to spray it if you are going to prune it.
It might grow back because it is so old and big. So you may have to keep spraying it. A spray late in the year just before it gets cold is the best time of the year to spray it.
Reply:I would go ahead and cut the large vines climbing the trees at about the 5 foot level. Then I would apply Ortho's poison ivy killer to the stump of the vine. It may take several applications but it does work. It will also kill tree stumps.

Reply:Have him cut the bottom of the vine. Then pour Roundup directly into the cut. YOu might have to cut in a couple places and do this but it should work.
