around my house there is both 3 and 5 leaf plants. My mom tells me the 5 leaf is poison ivy and i read on the internet that its 3. so, i dunno anymore... u tell me the correct awnser
Does poison ivy have 3 leaves or five?
Poison ivy and oak have three leaflets. It's very rare for them to have five. Poison sumac has 7 to 15 paired leaflets. If in doubt look closely at the leaves. Poison ivy/oak/sumac (except in early spring when they are just blooming) will have dark brown or black spots on the leaves. These spots are the sap that has oozed out from small bruises to the plant caused by chewing insects, being brushed against, blown by the wind, etc. Poison ivy is pretty distinctive and once you know what it looks like it's easy to identify. Just yesterday my husband and I went to a park and along the riverbank there was a huge patch of poison ivy.
Reply:Actually both are right. Poison Oak has 5 and Poison Ivy has 3.
Reply:"leaves of three let it be...leaves of four eat some more"
Reply:Poison ivy has three broad, spoon-shaped leaves or leaflets, but it can have more.
It may help you identify poison ivy by memorizing the phrase, "Leaves of three? Let it be."
Grows as a climbing vine or a low, spreading vine that sprawls through grass (more common in eastern states) or as a shrub (more common in northern states, Canada, and the Great Lakes region).
Often grows along rivers, lake fronts, and ocean beaches.
Has bright red leaves and white or cream berries in the autumn.

Reply:3 leaves and typically a few multi colored spots
Reply:my father who was an avid hiker always taught me that it was 3 not 5. not to say that the 5 leafed plant isn't something nasty too. i'd just be more wary of the 3 leafed one, because that is certainly poison ivy.
Reply:the saying is "leaves of 3 leave them be!" So don't go near the leaves of 3!
